The Rebuilding of a mental wall is a relatively short and simple song which contrasts my usual writing style, however the harmony of this piece is some of my favourite chords and progressions to date, This song is consistently in compound time changing from 6/8 to 9/8 occasionally however the bridge changes to 4/4. The structure of this piece is verse - pre-chorus - chorus - verse - pre-chorus - chorus - bridge - chorus - chorus.

The verses of this song are in the key of D minor making use of the natural minor scale, Harmonic minor and the melodic minor. The chord sequence is a i(m7) - i(mMaj7) - VII - III - IV - V. The minor-major7th chord creates a lot tension and allows for a pleasant resolution onto the C triad. This progression makes use of perfect cadences as well with C being the dominant of F and A being the dominant of Dm (The verse repeats three times)

The pre-Chorus changes to more of a Lydian sound with the #11 on the tonic putting a lot of emphasis on the mode. The second bar interchanges to G mixolydian with Bb being raised to a B natural. The note of E is present in all of these chords acting as a drone note. The chord progression is a I(#11) - II - VI(6) - V(maj7)

The chorus of this song changes to a Melodic minor sound in G, especially in the first two bars with the Natural E and F# with Bb still within the diatonic sequence. The final two bars feature a chromatic mediant progression with the top note going from G - F# - F.

The chord progression is a III(maj9) - IV(9) - V(11) - VII(add9) - I(maj7) - I(m7(6)).

The bridge of this song changes to the key of G minor and the time signature changes to 4/4. The key feature of this part is the chromatic bass notes which changes the colour and function of the chords despite only one note change. The minor-major7th allows for harmonic minor melodies, the minor 7th chord allows for natural minor or Dorian melodies and the Minor 6th would also allow for Dorian melodies as well as Melodic minor melodies. The chord progression is a i - i(minMaj7) - i(m7) - i(m6) - VI - V
